Selma Cafe is a wonderful Ann Arbor secret…. but this morning it seemed like the secret got out somehow. There was a line out the door and a one-hour wait, and there was a little nip in the air that make for chilly fingers as we stood in a driveway on the west side of Ann Arbor. So what exactly is so great about Selma Cafe? Lots.
Selma Cafe is not so much a “restaurant” as it is a weekly three-and-a-half hour demonstration of sustainable agriculture and local-foods artistry. This once-a-week breakfast event features only three or four menu items, prepared and served in the home of Lisa Gottlieb & Jeff McCabe, at 722 Soule Blvd, Friday mornings, 6:30 am to 10:00 am. Most people try to walk to the house, to avoid creating too much traffic in this residential area. There is a volunteer chef, volunteer servers and cooks, and little glass jars on every table for contributions. I believe most people contribute $10, but more is better…
The money goes to pay for the fresh, local ingredients and also to contribute to a fund that provides local farmers with hoop-houses, extending the growing season for the community. Selma Cafe operates through a fiscal partnership with the FSEP – the Food Systems Economic Partnership which provides 501c3 non-profit status.

The name “Selma” comes from a neighborhood association, the Soule-Eberwhite-Liberty-Madison Affiliation, named for some of the streets that bound the area, and offering various tool-share, book-share, and food-share opportunities.
What do I like so much about Selma? The best part of Selma is the feeling of community and friendship. I always run into interesting people when I visit: high-tech business owners, visitors to town, craftspeople, academics, new moms, people of all backgrounds. Everyone is provided with masking tape and Sharpie™ markers with which to make up a name tag. (One of my favorite things is the entry foyer of Jeff and Lisa’s house, which has walls covered with name tags left for re-use when visitors return.)
This morning was an unusually busy one, with many people off work for a long weekend. We sipped coffee, chatted with a woman who was part of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) crop share group, met two students from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, sat with a woman there with her two elementary school children, and chatted with a man who’d just retired the day before from Ford Motor Co.
Community Supported Agriculture
It was a perfect way to spend a Friday morning, and I highly recommend it. Although the menu changes weekly, I have a hard time ordering anything other than the bread pudding, which is served every week. It’s hard to describe, so I will just suggest that you make your way to Selma one Friday morning to try it!
